The Procedure
The procedure is recommended when your pet is several months old or at the time of the spay or nueter for those pets sensitive to needles. It requires the injection of a tiny computer chip—about the size of a grain of rice—just under your pet's skin, usually between the shoulder blades. (The procedure is also safe and easy for older pets.)

After placement, the computer chip number is registered so that scanners will be able to read the chip and display the registration number. Here at Belmont Shore Veterinary Hospital, these numbers are registered with The American Kennel Club (AKC). AKC keeps the corresponding owner information on file. Of course, without registration, the microchip is rendered useless.

For more information on the AKC microchip please visit www.akccar.org

Registration
Because we want to encourage you to microchip your pets and we want to make sure that you are reunited with your pets if they become lost, Belmont Shore Veterinary Hospital will pay the cost of registration. In addition, our staff will complete the registration process with you before you leave the hospital. In this way we hope to do our part to keep your pet safe.

Remember, even indoor pets and pets wearing collars and tags are at risk. Disaster situations, like Huricaine Katrina, taught us that microchips are the only reliable way to identify a pet and its owner. Animal shelters, humane societies, and veterinarians all keep a scanner on hand to check any stray or lost animals. Once the chip number is read, a few simple phone calls to the registratoin database and the owner are all that’s needed to reunite a lost pet and its owner!
